Overview
Jane Paingakulam was called to the Bar in 2009. Jane practices primarily in criminal law, appearing for both the prosecution and the defence. Jane holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney.
Jane has undertaken merit assessments for the offender in over 300 Court of Criminal Appeal conviction and/or severity appeal matters. She regularly appears (unled) in the Court of Criminal Appeal for the offender as the applicant and has also appeared for the offender as respondent in Crown appeals. In addition, Jane appears for the Crown, both led and unled, in appeals at this level. Jane also appears in the District Court, both in Sydney and in regional New South Wales.
In 2022, Jane appeared for the Crown in the 11 month NSW Supreme Court trial R v Cranston & Ors.
Jane was admitted as a solicitor in 1996 after completing a Bachelor of Arts/Laws at Sydney University.
Jane worked in the Australian Public Service for almost 14 years across five different agencies. Jane primarily held roles with an investigative or regulatory function, including over five years in the Enforcement Directorate of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. From 2008 to 2009 Jane was the NSW Regional Director of the Australian Public Service Commission.
Since commencing practice at the NSW Bar, Jane has provided advice to government agencies, both State and Commonwealth on a range of public sector issues.
